Technically Savvy Decorators - this is not a super beginner course where we will hand hold you through things, but we will cover what someone new needs to know. While xLights software was mainly developed for Christmas, it is by no means a Christmas only software. xLights, is used to control AC lights, LED lights, Pixels, Moving Heads, Fog Machines, and virtually any other device with its large library of protocols. If you have a traditional Christmas display and want to spice it up with animated RGB lighting or have a haunted attraction you want to add lighting and effects too or maybe you want to extend your revenue season by adding a Christmas venue to your existing Halloween venue. This is the best immersive class you can take to get you on your way. To get the most out of the class, we suggest the following:

    • You are comfortable with a computer and have at least played with setting up a layout in xLights and maybe created a test sequence even if you haven't connected any lights.
    • This is also not a deep dive into xLights ... we are aiming for breadth and best practices for efficient use of xLights. If you are already an expert, you will no doubt learn something but most of the content will be things you likely already know.
    • You must bring with you a laptop with xLights already installed on it to use during class sessions. xLights can be downloaded for free at https://xlights.org/releases/

    Rough Agenda:

    • Introductions
    • Overview of xLights and the controlled lighting ecosystem
    • Setting up your layout including downloading and creating models
    • Singing faces, submodels and custom models
    • An overview of effects and a deep dive into some of the more useful but obscure effects
    • Value curves, colour curves, bulk editing
    • Sequencing AC props
    • Importing sequences
    • Sequencing styles including lazy but effective sequencing
    • Connecting and configuring controllers using the visualizer and controller uploading
    • Playing your show using xSchedule intermediate (including building interactive shows)
    • We will also touch on Falcon Player
    • Automation
Speaker Bio: The legendary Keith Westley is one of the lead developers of the xLights software. Keith has been doing light decoration since 1993 and animated lighting since 2012 at his home in Sydney, Australia. Since 2014 Keith has been the most active developer of the xLights software bringing to life some of the most innovative features and productivity improvements which has made xLights the hobby (and increasingly industry) leading animated lighting control software. As a decorator, his real-world experience has led to a long list of software enhancements that have made animating holiday lighting easier and more obtainable for the average person. Keith is often found helping others in the Official xLights Support Zoom room helping other decorators around the world. This interaction with thousands of end users has allowed him to see how others use the software and with this feedback continues to enhance xLights software even further. With over 50 software updates a year, xLights is the fastest evolving sequencing software. Did we mention xLights software is free for both residential and commercial users? It is! Keith along with a handful of volunteer programmers have built xLights to a world class program that has caught the eye of companies like Tesla. Tesla liked xLights so much, they rolled out a firmware that allows Tesla owners to sequence their vehicles lights, doors, and other features with the xLights software.

Keith is also a leading trainer of Christmas light animators from beginner to advanced through both his YouTube training videos and face to face training across the globe. While he would never claim to know everything there is to know about xLights there really is no one who knows it, better nor understands the myriad of technologies that combine to make animated lighting a challenging, rewarding and fascinating hobby. You will not want to miss this opportunity to meet and learn from the source during this 12-hour training session over two days at Transworld’s Christmas Show.

Actors are your greatest asset and your greatest vulnerability. The success of your show lives and dies with your team’s nightly actions. If you go into the season without a clear Acting Team Design, you risk wasting hard earned money, having poor customer experiences and letting the patients run the asylum.

In this seminar, I will walk you through our audition preparations, design, talent categories, training practices, talent retention, and how to maintain the highest level of show production by understanding the materials/talent you are working with. This is not the only way, nor the best way, it is simply our way. We hope you’re able to take these suggestions and create a “way” that is uniquely yours, designed around your talented staff, and improves your show on a nightly basis.
