This forward-looking seminar explores how decades of hard-won lessons from the video game industry can be directly applied to escape rooms and location-based entertainment. From onboarding and difficulty curves to feedback loops, progression, and replayability, we’ll break down how games keep players engaged - and how those same principles can dramatically elevate live, physical experiences. As extended reality (XR) technologies become more accessible, escape rooms and immersive venues are entering a pivotal moment. This talk highlights the concrete opportunities XR creates for operators: blending physical sets with digital systems, layering narrative and mechanics, and expanding what an “escape room” can be without losing the tactile magic that makes the format special. Drawing on experience from blockbuster video games and cutting-edge location-based entertainment, this session will examine best practices at the intersection of games and escape rooms. We’ll discuss what translates cleanly from digital to physical, what doesn’t, and how to avoid common pitfalls when borrowing game design ideas for real-world play. Presented by Bill Mooney (FarmVille, Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes), Chip Sbrogna (Metroid Prime 2, God of War, Counter-Strike), and Matt Ames (Arcade Arena), this talk brings together perspectives from AAA games, social games, competitive play, and live interactive venues. If you’re an escape room owner, designer, or operator looking to future-proof your business, deepen player engagement, and understand how XR can be used intentionally rather than as a gimmick, this session will give you practical frameworks, shared vocabulary, and inspiration you can apply immediately - no controller required.
